The Ultimate Guide to Shore Excursions in Sitka, Alaska

If you're stepping off a cruise ship in Sitka, you’re already doing something right. This island town is one of Alaska’s hidden gems — tucked between the Pacific and the Tongass National Forest (the largest temperate rainforest on earth), where ravens and bald eagles call overhead. As someone who’s spent years exploring and filming in this place, I’ve come to believe that even a few hours here can change the way you see the world.
So whether you’ve got an hour, an afternoon, or a full day, this is my personal guide to making the most of your time in Sitka. These aren’t just shore excursions — they’re invitations into discover the wonder of Alaska.
If You're Booking Through the Cruise Line
If you're booking your shore excursions through the cruise line, much of your day — and transportation — will be taken care of. It’s a stress-free option, and you’re guaranteed to make it back to the ship on time. But it also comes with tradeoffs: you’ll usually pay more, and your itinerary will be more structured with less flexibility to explore on your own terms. That said, many cruise passengers still find themselves with free time before or after their excursions, or simply want to experience Sitka at their own pace. Whether you’re filling a gap, chasing something spontaneous, or building your own full-day adventure — this guide is here to help.

What to Expect in Sitka
Sitka Weather and What to Wear
Sitka is a temperate rainforest with over 200 days of rain a year. Don’t let it scare you — it’s what keeps the island lush and full of life. In fact, some of my favorite filming moments happened in the rain.
Pack a rain jacket, waterproof shoes, and a good hood. and umbrella. Expect temperatures in summer between 50°F and 65°F.
Sitka’s Vibe
Sitka isn’t built for flash. It’s made for connection. Artists, researchers, fishermen, and wildlife coexist here, and if you’re paying attention, you’ll feel that in everything — the food, the forest, the way the town breathes.
My Favorite Sitka Shore Excursions and Activities
(Many of these are linked so you can learn more or plan ahead!)
1. Sitka’s Hidden Wonders — A Wildlife Film You Can Only See Here
Okay, full disclosure: I made this film. So yes, I’m totally biased. But if you only have time for one indoor activity in Sitka, I genuinely think this is worth your time. Sitka’s Hidden Wonders is the only wildlife film shot entirely right here — and it dives into things most people never get to see, like the herring spawn in spring, plankton at night, and noctural seabirds on St. Lazaria Island. We share the big and iconic and the unique and overlooked to give you the best understanding of this incredible ecosystem as you traverse through it!
It’s local, personal, and (hopefully) pretty breathtaking — and the best part is, you don’t even have to get wet.
- Location: Coliseum Theatre, downtown
- Duration: 40 minutes
- Reserve tickets here
2. Alaska Raptor Center
This place is a haven for rescued eagles and owls, and I’ve filmed here on numerous occasions. Even though eald gles can be seen throughout town, there is something so incredible about seeing them up close and learning how they rehabilitate them. The setting is peaceful, the birds are powerful, and the staff does an amazing job educating guests. It’s also mostly covered, making it one of the top indoor things to do in Sitka when it rains.
- Great for families and wildlife lovers
- Beautiful forest setting with great photo ops
- Don’t miss the flight training enclosure
3. Sitka Sound Science Center
I love this place. It's where science and storytelling meet. Inside you’ll find touch tanks filled with starfish and sea cucumbers, a working salmon hatchery out back, and researchers who are happy to answer questions. This is a great stop for curious minds of all ages — and a fantastic rainy day activity.
- Learn about salmon and marine ecosystems
- Get upclose with intertidal life
- Right next to Totem Trail and the ocean
4. Totem Trail at Sitka National Historical Park
If you want to walk through Sitka’s past, this is the place. The trail winds through old-growth forest, passing by dozens of towering totem poles. The story behind each one connects to Tlingit history and the complex relationship with Russian colonizers. It’s peaceful, powerful, and a must-visit for history lovers.
- Easy walking trail (wheelchair accessible)
- Great photo opportunities
- Historic visitor center with exhibits
5. Alaska Storytellers Group
This is the best cultural performance in town. You’ll experience traditional Tlingit drumming, dancing, and oral storytelling — all indoors and easy to reach from downtown. If you want to understand Sitka beyond the scenery, this is a powerful way to start.
- Seasonal, check performance schedule
- Excellent for cruise guests with limited time
- Connects deeply with Alaska Native culture
6. Wildlife Boat Tours
Some of the best moments I’ve ever filmed in Sitka have come from the deck of a wildlife boat tour. These trips take you out into Sitka Sound to see whales, sea otters, puffins, sea lions, and bald eagles. I’ve been out with several operators and you truly can’t go wrong.
Great Operators I Recommend:
- True Alaskan Tours – Spacious boats and professional guides
- Gallant Adventures with Paul Davis – Personalized, small-group naturalist tours
- Sitka Adventures with Captain Gary – Local knowledge and custom experiences
- Sitka Wildlife Adventures with Davy Lubin – Deeply ecological and intimate wildlife encounters
You won’t have a bad trip with any of them — just book early because they fill up fast.
7. Kayak Sitka Sound
If you're up for adventure, this is one of the most magical ways to see Sitka. Paddle through kelp forests, around tiny islands, and along wildlife-rich coastlines. It's quiet, meditative, and perfect for those who want a close connection with the water.
- Usually requires 3+ hours
- Guides available or rent and go
- Dress for water spray even on calm days
8. Wander Downtown
From local art galleries to handmade jewelry, bookshops, and coastal souvenirs — downtown Sitka is full of personality. It’s an easy walk from the shuttle drop-off or docks, and a great way to stretch your legs and bring home something meaningful.
- Local artists and small boutiques
- Sheldon Jackson Museum & Russian Bishop’s House nearby
- Great stop between excursions or before dinner
9. Fortress of the Bear
This bear rescue sanctuary is a non-profit offering close-up views of orphaned brown bears. It’s a unique stop, though not the same as seeing bears in the wild.
